A survey of the endophagous insects fauna associated to Asteraceae capitula was carried out from 2000 to 2002 in eight cerrado sensu stricto sites located in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. Sixty-four endophagous species of Diptera and Lepidoptera were recorded from 49 asteracean host plants. Approximately half of the species were obtained from a single locality, with a large proportion emerging from a single sample (unicates). Thirty percent of the species were singletons (i.e. only one individual was recorded). The large proportion of rare species suggests a high species turnover among localities. Lepidopteran species were recorded on more host species than dipterans, confirming their more polyphagous food habit, also observed in other Brazilian biomes... |

External morphology of the immature stages of neotropical heliconians: I. Eueides isabella dianasa (Hübner, 1806). The external features of egg, larva and pupa of Eueides isabella dianasa (Hübner, 1806) (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae) are described and illustrated, based upon light and scanning electron microscopy. |

Fifteen species of Aguna Williams, 1927 (Hesperiidae: Pyrginae) are known from near Cacaulàndia in central Rondônia, Brazil; nine represent undescribed species. These nine, plus four additional new species discovered among material from other areas, are named and described: Aguna latifascia, Aguna coeloides, Aguna nicolayi, Aguna latimacula, Aguna penicillata, Aguna spicata, Aguna longicauda, Aguna panama, Aguna spatulala, Aguna similis, Aguna mesodenlala, Aguna squamalba, Aguna parva. The species of Aguna are placed into ten species groups based upon the characters of the male and female genitalia. These groups are described and their included species are discussed. Aguna williamsi Hayward, 1935, new synonymy is considered synonymous with Eudamus... |

This study describes the reproductive system of Stachytarpheta maximiliani (Verbenaceae), including its floral biology, nectar and pollen availability and insect foraging patterns, identifying whose species act as pollinators. It was carried out in a Brazilian Atlantic rain forest site. Observations on the pollination biology of the Verbenaceae S. maximiliani indicate that their flowering period extends from September through May. Anthesis occurs from 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and nectar and pollen are available during all the anthesis. Many species of beetles, hemipterans, flies, wasps, bees and butterflies visit their flowers, but bees and butterflies are the most frequent visitors. The flowers are generally small, gathered in dense showy inflorescences. A... |

This research was developed in green house of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil and the objective was to evaluate oviposition patterns of Ascia monuste orseis (Godart, 1819) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) in the canopy of Brassica oleracea Linnaeus plants. Ascia monuste orseis eggs were laid preferable during the morning period, in higher numbers in the stem of these plants and in the leaves of the lower part of the plants. Higher number of eggs was found in the lower parts of leaves of plants with no previous oviposition. |

A planta invasora Solanum americanum (maria-pretinha), associada à cultura,... |

The thermal requirements of Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 were determined by rearing this pupal parasitoid in the following lepidopteran hosts: Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Crambidae), Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner, 1818), Heliothis virescens (Fabricius, 1777), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Noctuidae) and Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Geometridae). The experiment was set in laboratory conditions (temperatures between 18ºC and 30ºC, RH=70 ± 10% and 14-hour photoperiod). The life cycle (egg-adult) ranged from 40.4 ± 0.63 days (18ºC, H. virescens) to 18.1 ± 0.13 days (28ºC, D. saccharalis). The thermal constant of the egg-adult period ranged from 353.1 (D. saccharalis) to 407.7 degree-days (S. frugiperda).... |
